European Parliament urges accelerated EU accession talks for Moldova

The European Parliament has called for the immediate opening of all outstanding negotiation clusters for Moldova's accession to the European Union. This strong endorsement of Moldova's European aspirations came in the form of an annual report on the country's progress, adopted with a significant majority of 505 votes in favor, 115 against, and 45 abstentions.

MEPs, including Siegfried Mureșan, who chairs the European Parliament's Delegation for relations with Moldova, emphasized that the report includes amendments pushing for an accelerated accession process. Mureșan stated that the Parliament fully supports Moldova's European journey, recognizing the country as a frontrunner in the accession process. He highlighted that the reforms and progress achieved by the Moldovan authorities deserve to be rewarded with faster negotiations.

The report also explicitly condemns "repeated attempts by the Russian Federation to destabilize the Republic of Moldova," including efforts to influence electoral processes. In response, the Parliament is calling for enhanced financial and technical support for Moldova. This aid is intended to strengthen the country's security, counter external threats, and sustain the reforms necessary for EU membership.

Mureșan concluded by stressing the strategic importance of Moldova's integration into the EU, stating, "The European future of the Republic of Moldova is one of the European Parliament's major priorities, as a secure, stable Moldova integrated into the European Union is in the security interest of the whole of Europe."
