Europol Issues Stern Message After Patrol Car Overturns, Catches Fire During Pursuit; Two Officers Injured

Two police officers sustained injuries when their patrol car overturned and ignited during a pursuit in Romania's Constanța County. The incident unfolded in Pecineaga on Thursday, August 20, after officers from the Mangalia Police's Public Order Bureau responded to a 112 emergency call about a car driving erratically and endangering other road users.

Officers pursued the vehicle, which carried two occupants. To avoid colliding with the fleeing car, the police officers executed a maneuver that resulted in their patrol vehicle overturning. The car subsequently caught fire, and the two officers were injured. A SMURD helicopter was dispatched to the scene.

Following the incident, the Europol union issued a statement emphasizing the critical need for safe and high-performance vehicles for police interventions. "The police patrol car overturned and caught fire," Europol stated on Facebook. "Here, it must be noted that a car branded with the Romanian Police insignia does not, by itself, become a vehicle prepared for high-risk interventions."

Europol stressed that officers require more than just courage. "They need safe, high-performance patrol cars adapted to the reality on the ground," the union added. "Because every second counts. Because every intervention can make the difference between life and death." The union commended the injured officers for prioritizing public safety over their own and wished them a swift recovery, while calling on decision-makers to invest in genuine equipment for police officers.
