Evenepoel wins first Tour de France mountain stage; Pogacar extends lead

Belgian rider Remco Evenepoel claimed victory in the first alpine stage of the Tour de France, crossing the finish line ahead of Slovenian rival Tadej Pogacar. Pogacar, however, solidified his grip on the yellow jersey as the overall leader, a position strengthened by the withdrawal of Danish contender Jonas Vingegaard following a crash.

Mexican cyclist Isaac del Toro secured third place at the Plateau de Solaison finish line. Del Toro, a teammate of Pogacar, now sits third in the general classification, trailing the leader by 5 minutes and 58 seconds. He is also 58 seconds behind Evenepoel, who moved into second place overall after Vingegaard's exit.

At just 19 years old, Del Toro also claimed the white jersey as the best young rider, taking it from France's Paul Siexas. Siexas lost 58 seconds to the stage winner and now trails Del Toro by 25 seconds in the general standings, placing him fourth overall.

The stage, which featured an unprecedented finish before the second rest day, was significantly impacted by Vingegaard's abandonment. In a notable display of sportsmanship, Pogacar appeared to prioritize helping his teammate Del Toro secure a strong position over pursuing his own fifth stage win of the current Tour.
