Evenepoel wins fourth Clásica de San Sebastián, breaks Lejarreta's record

Remco Evenepoel has etched his name further into cycling history by claiming his fourth Clásica de San Sebastián title, surpassing the previous record held by Spanish cycling legend Marino Lejarreta.

Evenepoel's victory on the challenging Basque roads was hard-fought. Early in the race, he suffered a puncture just kilometers from the start of the Erlaitz climb. Despite this setback and visible frustration with race officials, the Belgian rider launched an impressive attack on the ascent, steadily closing the gap to the leaders.

While riders like Richard Carapaz and Giulio Ciccone, the 2025 winner, were present in the front group, they were unable to capitalize on Evenepoel's momentary difficulties. Evenepoel's remarkable strength allowed him to rejoin the main contenders and position himself for the final decisive climbs, including the Murgil ascent.

The race also marked a significant moment for Mikel Landa, who announced his return to the Euskadi team for the next season on the day of the classic. Landa, who had previously ridden for Evenepoel's Soudal team, is returning to the team where he began his professional career, signaling a new chapter for the experienced climber.
