Event in São Paulo marks 150 years since Dom Pedro II's visit to Lebanon

An event scheduled for September 1st in São Paulo will celebrate the 150th anniversary of Emperor Dom Pedro II's pivotal visit to Lebanon. This historical journey initiated the significant wave of Lebanese immigration to Brazil, a nation that now hosts the world's largest Lebanese diaspora, estimated at 10 million people, more than the population of Lebanon itself.

The commemoration, organized by the Brazil-Lebanon Cultural Association, is a partnership with Dom Bertrand de Orleans e Bragança, head of the Brazilian Imperial House and great-grandson of Dom Pedro II. A key highlight of the event will be the unprecedented public exhibition of the monarch's sword and flag, generously loaned by the Brazilian Imperial House. Additionally, commemorative stamps and postmarks designed by the Brazilian Post will be launched during the opening ceremony.

Lody Brais, president of the Brazil-Lebanon Cultural Association, emphasized the event's importance in strengthening ties between Brazil and Lebanon. She stated that Dom Pedro II's 1876 trip was a fundamental milestone that spurred Lebanese immigration, leading to the creation of the substantial Lebanese-Brazilian community. The event underscores the deep historical and cultural connections between the two nations, rooted in this imperial initiative.

Dom Pedro II, born in Rio de Janeiro in 1825, ascended to the throne at a young age. His reign, spanning nearly fifty years, coincided with Brazil's consolidation as a nation, the expansion of its public institutions, and advancements in arts and sciences. Beyond his political achievements, his travels, introspective nature, and family relationships have generated numerous stories and studies, reflecting the multifaceted legacy of the Brazilian emperor.
