Ex-prosecutor to face investigation in freedom after assaulting police officer in Piura

Former assistant provincial prosecutor Johanny Lindao will remain free while investigated for allegedly resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer in Piura. The Third Preparatory Investigation Court of Piura imposed restrictive measures for four months, including a S/1,000 bail and a ban on leaving Piura without judicial authorization.

The investigation stems from a July 11 incident during a traffic operation near the National University of Piura. Prosecutors allege Lindao refused to identify herself, obstructed the police intervention, and later assaulted a sub-officer with a headbutt inside a police station, causing certified injuries.

During the hearing, Lindao denied the criminal charges but admitted to an ethical infraction. Her defense argued that a widely circulated video of the altercation was edited and did not show the preceding events. Lindao claimed she entered the police office to ask for her handcuffs to be loosened and to make a call, but an officer insulted and pushed her.

Lindao stated she did not try to use her position as a prosecutor to avoid the intervention, asserting the officer recognized her and called her "doctora." She also alleged excessive force was used during her detention. Lindao clarified she has not been dismissed from the Ministry Public but ceased her role as an assistant provincial prosecutor, and will return to her original position as a lawyer in the Internal Control area.
