Explosion in Buenaventura kills one, injures another; investigation underway

An explosion in the rural area of La Gloria, near Buenaventura, Colombia, has left one person dead and another injured. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, July 21, is being investigated by local authorities. The Valle Police reported that the explosion was likely caused by a fragmentation grenade.

According to the police, one individual was admitted to the Santa Sofía clinic with shrapnel wounds. Responding officers discovered another man deceased at the scene. Initial investigations suggest that one of the individuals was manipulating an explosive device, leading to its detonation.

During the technical inspection of the site, investigators found evidence, including the safety lever of an IM-M26 hand grenade. These items have been submitted for analysis. The deceased individual had a criminal record, with previous annotations for rebellion in 2015 and 2022, and for manufacturing, trafficking, or possessing firearms in 2020.

The Technical Investigation Unit (CTI) has taken charge of the investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the explosion. The police urged the community to report any information regarding the handling or presence of explosive devices to prevent further incidents.
