Explosive devices found near two substations in Saxony

Explosive devices were reportedly discovered near two electrical substations in Saxony as police continued investigating a series of suspected acts of sabotage against Germany’s power network.

The devices were found near two facilities in the Görlitz district, the Bild newspaper reported. Police confirmed a major operation in the region but initially gave few details. A police spokeswoman said, “There is a police operation. For police tactical reasons, we cannot comment on it.”

A spokesman for the Görlitz police directorate confirmed a “large-scale operation” in the Bautzen district to Agence France-Presse. He would not say what officers were looking for or exactly where the operation was taking place. Further details were expected on Saturday.

MDR reported that emergency personnel were searching a wooded area near State Road 126 at Schleife in the Görlitz district, close to the Brandenburg border. Police left open whether that operation was connected to the recent investigations into sabotage of power lines.

Attacks on substations near Jänschwalde in Brandenburg and Bergheim in North Rhine-Westphalia were reported on Tuesday. Additional suspicious devices were later found in Dormagen and Weisweiler. Investigators are searching for a 48-year-old man from North Rhine-Westphalia who came under suspicion after two statements claiming responsibility were assessed as authentic.
