Extreme heat forces temporary suspension of some driver's license tests in South Korea

South Korea is modifying its driver's license functional testing schedule in response to persistent heatwaves. The Korea Road Traffic Authority announced on Friday that afternoon testing sessions will be temporarily reduced or suspended to prioritize the safety of applicants and staff.

This measure comes as the country experiences severe heat warnings and alerts. To mitigate risks associated with high temperatures, the authority will concentrate testing during the cooler morning hours. When the perceived temperature is expected to exceed 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit), afternoon test sessions will be adjusted.

Given the extreme heatwave, these are unavoidable measures taken with consideration for the safety of test applicants and on-site workers.

Applicants with existing reservations will be notified about any changes to their scheduled test times. The testing centers will be equipped with portable air conditioning units, shade structures, and parasols to provide some relief from the heat. The authority stated that testing operations will be managed flexibly based on the prevailing weather conditions.

A spokesperson for the authority acknowledged that these adjustments are necessary given the extreme heat, emphasizing the need to consider the safety of both test-takers and on-site employees. They advised the public to avoid outdoor activities as much as possible and to take precautions to stay hydrated and manage their health during this period.
