Fact Check: No New Rupiah Banknotes Featuring Prabowo and Gibran to Be Issued in June 2026

A wave of fabricated images depicting new Indonesian rupiah banknotes has spread across social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, X, and YouTube. These circulating visuals feature President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, along with the Garuda Pancasila symbol and the Bank Indonesia (BI) logo. The purported new notes include denominations of Rp18,000 (in two variations) and Rp1,000,000.

However, Bank Indonesia has officially debunked these claims. Through its official Instagram account, the central bank confirmed that the images are counterfeit. Bank Indonesia stated that the Rp18,000 denomination does not exist and has never been issued. The public is advised to refer to the official banknote designs available on BI's website (www.bi.go.id) for accurate information.

Tempo's fact-checking process, utilizing AI content scanners and cross-referencing with credible information, has confirmed the fraudulent nature of these images. One Rp18,000 note, featuring the National Monument (Monas), was identified by the AI or NOT tool as being 77% artificial intelligence-generated, likely using OpenAI's GPT-40 model. The Zhuque AI Detector Assistant corroborated this, assigning a 99.14% probability of the image being artificial.

Further analysis by the Zhuque AI Detector Assistant indicated that another Rp18,000 banknote, depicting a Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) menu and the images of Prabowo and Gibran, was a 99.8% imitation. Decopay.ai and Undetectable.ai also flagged this image as a digital imitation due to the unusual inclusion of food elements on currency. Similarly, an image of a Rp1,000,000 bill was detected as 99.9% artificial.
