Fact Check: Was Gianni Infantino Upset by Torres' World Cup Final Goal?

A video circulating on social media platforms X and Instagram falsely claims to show FIFA President Gianni Infantino reacting with bias towards Argentina during the 2026 World Cup final. The video suggests Infantino's facial expression indicates his support for Argentina when Spain's Ferran Torres scored.

However, Tempo's Fact Check team investigated the claim and found it to be misleading. The video does show Infantino in the stadium stands, but not during the World Cup final match between Spain and Argentina on July 19, 2026. According to Spanish broadcaster RTVE, the footage was captured during the Canada-Morocco match in the round of 16 on July 4, 2026.

Further analysis revealed that the circulating video has been horizontally flipped. This is evidenced by the upside-down display of "2026 World Cup" text at the bottom of the screen and the visible Moroccan flag at the 13-second mark. Multiple photos from Getty Images from the Canada-Morocco match show a similar atmosphere, including the presence of Confederation of African Football President Patrice Motsepe and Moroccan Football Federation President Fouzi Lekjaa, whose positions appear reversed in the manipulated video.

In the original footage, Infantino is seen applauding as others around him stand to react to a goal. This video was later repurposed with captions falsely linking it to Torres' goal in the World Cup final. Ferran Torres scored Spain's winning goal against Argentina in the 106th minute of the final, which took place at New York New Jersey Stadium. Reuters documented Infantino's presence at the final, seated in the stands with other dignitaries.
