Fake Kevin Costner Scams Argentine Woman Out of Millions

A 70-year-old woman from General Madariaga, Argentina, has fallen victim to a sophisticated online scam, losing over 3.6 million pesos (approximately $3,600,000 Argentine Pesos) after being defrauded by an individual impersonating actor Kevin Costner.

The elaborate scheme began when the woman, a devoted fan of Costner, followed a profile she believed belonged to the actor on TikTok. Over several months, a relationship was built through messages, leading the victim to believe she was developing a long-distance romance with the star of "The Bodyguard." The scammer, using the guise of Costner, eventually convinced her to sell her home, promising to buy her a better one in Santa Monica, California.

Communication initially took place on TikTok, but the scammer later directed the victim to use Zangi, a messaging app known for its privacy and encryption features, often used by criminal elements. The conversations reportedly continued in English. The victim's suspicions were reportedly only aroused after she made several bank transfers totaling the significant sum. Her belief was solidified when she received a digitally designed ID card with her name and photo, supposedly granting her entry into a "fanatic partner" franchise.

The case is now under investigation by the prosecutor's office in General Madariaga. Authorities have collected the victim's testimony and evidence of the deposits made into a bank account based in Buenos Aires. The fraud involved two main transfers: one for $419,612 pesos and another for $3,202,100 pesos, made within two days in mid-May.
