FAM honorary president post to be abolished?

The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) may abolish the position of honorary president, a move proposed by Kuala Lumpur Football Association (KLFA) president Syed Yazid Syed Omar. The proposal is set to be presented at an extraordinary congress on June 4.

Syed Yazid, who also serves as KLFA president, outlined two additional suggestions for amending FAM's regulations. He proposed that candidates for the FAM presidency must be 62 years old or younger to ensure they are healthy and energetic. Furthermore, he suggested that positions other than the presidency should be filled by candidates from affiliated bodies, excluding individuals with no prior connection to football, unless they are ministers or royalty.

"We already have a new president, so why do we need two captains on one ship?" Syed Yazid questioned, explaining his rationale for abolishing the honorary president role. He believes having two leaders could confuse executive committee members and FAM staff.

Syed Yazid stated he would discuss these proposals with the KLFA committee before presenting them to other affiliates and subsequently to the extraordinary congress. He confirmed receiving notification of the congress but not the agenda, which is typically distributed the week of the event. The honorary president position was previously awarded to former FAM president Tan Sri Hamidin Mohd Amin last June, recognizing his over 30 years of contribution to football.
