Family of National Opera violinist Svetlana Okuņa clings to hope as Nepal crisis unfolds

Nearly a week has passed since major landslides and floods struck Nepal and Tibet, yet the fate of 33 Latvian and two Estonian citizens trapped in the region remains unknown.

Among the missing is Svetlana Okuņa, first violinist at the National Opera. Her family last spoke with her on Aug. 25, on the eve of the disaster.

As the situation in Nepal develops, Okuņa’s family continues to hold on to hope. The missing group has been reported as unaccounted for after the landslides and floods that killed hundreds of people.
