Family seeks N17 million for three-month-old’s heart surgery

A three-month-old baby, Adegbite Robiah, needs urgent corrective heart surgery estimated to cost N17 million, with her family racing against a November deadline to raise the funds. Robiat, born on May 9, 2026, was diagnosed with a complete atrioventricular septal defect (balanced), Rastelli type A, after developing rapid breathing.

An echocardiography report from Lagos State University Teaching Hospital indicated a large inlet ventricular septal defect, a large ostium primum atrial septal defect, an additional ostium secundum atrial septal defect, and a patent ductus arteriosus. The report also noted a cleft of the left atrioventricular valve with mild regurgitation, mild right atrioventricular valve regurgitation, dilated pulmonary arteries, and a mild pericardial effusion. Robiah also has Trisomy 21, according to the medical report.

We are placed on a waiting list which is very far off. Alternatively, the family was given a consolidated estimate of about N14m, with a September target for the procedure.

The cardiologist at LASUTH recommended surgery before November 9, when Robiat turns six months old. The recommended facility is the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex, where the surgery is estimated at N17 million. An alternative is a program with the Kanu Heart Foundation for treatment in India, with an initial estimate of N14 million and a September target.

Despite nearly two months of fundraising efforts, the family has secured only about N900,000, leaving a substantial shortfall. The family is appealing to Nigerians, organizations, and corporations for urgent support to enable Robiat to undergo the life-saving procedure within the critical timeframe.
