NAFDAC strengthens regulatory oversight of blood products in Nigeria

Nigeria's National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) is significantly bolstering its regulatory oversight of blood and blood products. This strategic enhancement aims to improve the quality, safety, and consistent availability of these critical medical supplies across the nation.

The initiative, announced with the backing of Health Minister Muhammad Pate, directly follows World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations. These guidelines classify blood and blood products as essential medicines, underscoring the need for national regulatory authorities to manage them rigorously. NAFDAC's expanded regulation will encompass every stage of the blood transfusion process, including donor screening, collection, testing, processing, storage, transportation, and final use by patients.

NAFDAC highlighted that effective regulation is crucial for healthcare, especially in critical situations like emergencies, surgeries, and childbirth. By ensuring that blood products meet stringent safety and quality standards at every step, the agency seeks to protect patient well-being. Nigeria's move positions its regulatory system closer to international best practices, joining other African nations like Egypt, Ghana, and South Africa that have already placed similar oversight under their regulatory bodies.

The agency's enhanced capacity is supported by recent achievements, including reaching WHO Maturity Level 3 and successfully completing a reassessment. Its drug laboratory has also secured WHO prequalification, and its quality management systems have earned international accreditation. NAFDAC has established a dedicated directorate for Vaccines, Biologicals, and Medical Devices to manage registration and regulation, further strengthening its operational framework.
