Family subjected to extortion for months – 18-year-old convicted for bombing

An 18-year-old man has been sentenced to five years and six months in prison for his role in a violent explosion that rocked a residential area in Södertälje, Sweden, in April. The blast caused significant damage to a villa, including its patio doors and windows, and affected nearby vehicles and property.

The explosion is believed to be connected to a protracted extortion plot against the family residing in the targeted villa. Court documents reveal that the family has been subjected to multiple attacks since December 2025, with at least three other explosions occurring at addresses linked to them during the spring and summer of 2026. Police suspect a criminal network is behind these coordinated acts.

The convicted 18-year-old was apprehended shortly after the April explosion following a police chase. During the pursuit, he discarded items including shoes, a balaclava, a cap, a folding knife, and a mobile phone. He has refused to explain his presence in Södertälje, claiming he panicked upon hearing shouts before his arrest. The court noted he had a lighter on his person, and paper bags found were believed to have been used to transport the explosive device.

While the court established the family's prolonged victimization and the connection to extortion, it could not definitively prove that the 18-year-old acted with the specific intent of furthering the extortion. He was therefore convicted of causing public endangerment of a standard degree. Another young man initially charged with aiding and abetting was acquitted in the same ruling. The 18-year-old had denied all charges.
