Famous 'Breakup Temple' Engulfed by Flames; Historic Hall Damaged

A fire ravaged the Lingxiao Baodian hall at Zhinan Temple in Taipei on Sunday night, leaving the structure almost unrecognizable. The temple, a significant Taoist center in northern Taiwan that also integrates Confucian and Buddhist beliefs, is renowned for its unique architecture and its legendary association with the deity Lu Dongbin.

Founded in 1890, Zhinan Temple boasts a sprawling complex blending traditional Minnan and northern palace styles. The Lingxiao Baodian, or Jade Emperor Hall, is the highest structure within the temple grounds. Its roof features a Minnan-style upper layer adorned with dragons and phoenixes, while the second layer sports a northern style with cloud and beast motifs. Intricate carvings on walls and dragon pillars, made from rare Guanyinshan stone, were once highlighted with gold paint, adding a touch of opulence to the ancient design.

Despite its rich cultural and artistic heritage, Zhinan Temple was not officially designated as a historical monument or heritage building. It operates primarily as a folk religious site and tourist attraction. The temple's religious significance stems from its veneration of Lu Dongbin, one of the Eight Immortals, alongside other deities like the Jade Emperor and the Queen Mother of the West. This has long drawn numerous worshippers seeking blessings for peace, prosperity, and wealth.

Interestingly, Zhinan Temple is popularly known as the "Breakup Temple" due to a widespread legend that couples who worship together will separate. However, historical research by the temple's cultural center suggests this notion is a misinterpretation. Early records indicate that couples often visited the temple together to pray for successful relationships. The Lingxiao Baodian, which was heavily damaged by the fire, had previously attracted international attention, notably serving as a filming location for the 1969 Hollywood film "The Chairman," starring Gregory Peck.
