Fatal Hit-and-Run in Carinthia Solved: Trail Leads to Volunteer Fire Department Van

Authorities in Carinthia, Austria, have reportedly solved the case of a fatal hit-and-run that occurred early Sunday morning in Globasnitz, where a 20-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle. The driver fled the scene, leaving behind metal fragments that became crucial evidence for investigators.

Following an intensive investigation and numerous tips, police focused on a Mercedes Sprinter van associated with a volunteer fire department in the Völkermarkt district. The van was found to have human tissue on its undercarriage, leading to the identification of a pensioner and former firefighter from the district as the driver. The incident took place shortly before 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, as the young man was walking along the Bleiburger Straße (B81) after attending a fire department festival.

According to media reports, the driver confessed to hitting what he described as a "motionless human body" lying in the middle of the road. He stated that he initially fled the scene in shock but returned shortly thereafter to help secure the accident site. Despite first aid administered by a bystander and a doctor, the 20-year-old victim died at the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
