Father of US Teen School Shooter Sentenced to 15 Years

Colin Gray, the father of a teenager who fatally shot four people at a U.S. high school, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison. This conviction marks a rare instance where a parent has been held legally responsible for a school shooting carried out by their child.

Gray, 55, gifted his son, Colt Gray, an AR-15-style rifle for Christmas in 2023. This occurred despite prior warnings that the then-15-year-old boy had threatened to commit a school shooting. Colt Gray, now 16, pleaded guilty to the September 2024 attack at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia. He was sentenced earlier this week to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

A jury found Colin Gray guilty in March of second-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, and other charges related to the shooting. The attack claimed the lives of two 14-year-old students and two teachers, while nine other individuals were wounded. During the sentencing hearing, Superior Court Judge Nicholas Primm stated, "It is clear you failed as a parent." The judge noted Gray's failure to provide a stable household and ensure his son attended school, but emphasized that the conviction stemmed from Gray's inaction despite "warning lights flashing brighter and brighter" and his failure to get his son help or remove his access to firearms.
