FC Copenhagen Secures Conference League Spot, Captain Delaney Eyes Deeper Runs

FC Copenhagen has secured a place in the Conference League group stage, a crucial achievement that brought relief to players and coach Bo Svensson after their 4-1 victory over Inter Turku. This advancement guarantees the team at least six matches in Europe's third-tier club competition.

Captain Thomas Delaney acknowledged the Conference League's standing but stressed the quality of its participants. "The teams in the Conference League can also play football. It's perhaps not always Real Madrid we meet," Delaney stated. "But these are experiences, and then we can see how far we can take it."

Delaney also pointed to the importance of European qualification for the team's large squad of 28 players, allowing for better distribution of playing time. He emphasized the significance for the club's finances and, most importantly, for the fans who crave European nights. "But most importantly, it means something for the fans with these experiences," he added.

The journey to qualification was arduous. FC Copenhagen found themselves in the Superliga's relegation playoffs last spring, ultimately securing their European spot through a seventh-place league finish and a hard-fought playoff victory against Brøndby. "It has been a long way," Delaney reflected, referencing the derby win against Brøndby as a pivotal qualification match.

Coach Bo Svensson echoed Delaney's sentiment about the challenging path. "When I arrived, we were number eight. Then we first had to become number seven. Then we had to win in Brøndby and then advance from three qualifying rounds," Svensson said, praising the team's performance in the win against the Finnish side. Delaney, looking ahead, prefers to focus on the broader perspectives rather than just the immediate win, anticipating more European evenings, away trips for the fans, and hopefully, exciting opponents.
