Federal Deputy Demands Sanctions Against Gas Company After Cuernavaca Explosion

Federal deputy Magda Salgado has formally requested that Mexico's Chamber of Deputies urge relevant agencies to review and enforce safety protocols concerning liquefied petroleum (LP) gas transport. This action follows a devastating gas cloud explosion in Cuernavaca that claimed one life and injured more than 20 people.

Salgado's proposal specifically targets the company Tomza Gas Titanium S.A. de C.V. She is demanding that the Agency of Safety, Energy, and Environment (ASEA) and the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) initiate immediate technical audits and extraordinary inspections of Tomza's operations in Morelos. If serious violations of industrial safety standards are confirmed, Salgado calls for the immediate revocation of the company's federal distribution permit.

Furthermore, the deputy urged the state's mobility and transportation coordination, along with state and municipal civil protection units, to publicly release detailed reports on vehicle inspections and operating licenses issued to LP gas distributors. She also called for coordinated, immediate, and permanent operational reviews of distribution units operating in residential areas, with vehicles lacking safety certifications or valid civil liability insurance policies to be removed from circulation.

The Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE) has reported that 14 settlement agreements have been reached concerning the explosion, with 66 complaints filed regarding damages and injuries. The FGE is also being urged by Salgado to ensure that any settlement agreements do not absolve responsible parties of criminal liability, particularly concerning the culpable homicide charge related to the death of Viviana Aguilar Zendejas. The federal Attorney General's Office (FGR) has taken over key forensic analyses of the incident, which occurred on August 6.
