Federal Highway motorcycle lane needs greater safety improvements

Concerns are mounting over the safety and comfort of motorcyclists using the Federal Highway's motorcycle lane, one of Malaysia's oldest and longest, originally built in the 1970s. The lane connects Klang to Kuala Lumpur, passing through key areas like Shah Alam, Sunway, Kelana Jaya, and Petaling Jaya.

In response to long-standing complaints, the Ministry of Works has allocated RM20 million for a significant upgrade project. This project, overseen by the Public Works Department of Selangor, is currently around 43% complete and is projected to be finished by August next year. Improvements such as repainting tunnels and installing new lighting have already enhanced visibility in previously dark sections.

However, several locations still demand immediate attention. Notably, the motorcycle tunnel near the University of Malaya Medical Centre has missing drain covers, posing a risk to riders, especially at night or in poor visibility. Contractors and relevant agencies are urged to conduct thorough maintenance and repairs to ensure the upgrade truly benefits the more than 30,000 daily users.

A well-maintained, well-lit, and clean lane is a basic necessity for safe daily commutes. The focus must be on ensuring the physical improvements translate into genuine safety and comfort for all motorcyclists using this vital route.
