Femicides in Paraguay: Victim Count Reaches 17 in 2026

Paraguay is facing a grim escalation in gender-based violence, with the number of femicides rising to 17 in 2026. The latest figures from the Public Prosecutor's Office reveal a disturbing acceleration, with three women killed in the past two weeks alone, bringing the total from 14 to 17.

This tragic trend extends beyond the fatalities, with 25 attempted femicides also reported. The violence leaves a devastating trail of orphaned children; 24 minors are now without their mothers due to these crimes. Official statistics indicate that 13 of the 17 victims had children, resulting in a total of 33 children losing their mothers.

The victims, predominantly Paraguayan nationals with one Brazilian victim, ranged in age from a shocking 12 years old to 80. The perpetrators, whose ages span from 18 to 80, are often intimately connected to the victims. The data shows that 12 alleged perpetrators have been charged, while five committed suicide after the attacks.

Alarmingly, the home environment emerges as the most dangerous space for women in Paraguay. Thirteen of the 17 femicides occurred within residences, highlighting the vulnerability women face even in their own living spaces. Only four cases took place in public areas. The primary weapon used in these attacks was a knife, accounting for 10 cases, followed by firearms and blunt force trauma.
