Land Dispute Erupts in Violence, Leaving One Stabbed and Homes Burned in Guarambaré

A violent clash over land occupation and leadership in Guarambaré, Paraguay, erupted Sunday night, leaving one young man seriously injured and several makeshift homes destroyed by fire. The incident occurred in the Territorio Social Yvysunu, where tensions between groups disputing land claims escalated into physical altercations.

Arnaldo Ramón Martínez Díaz, 23, sustained a deep stab wound to the abdomen during the melee. He was initially treated by neighbors before being rushed to Guarambaré Hospital and later transferred to the Hospital de Trauma in Asunción, where he remains hospitalized. Martínez Díaz has prior convictions for aggravated theft and especially grave theft.

As the personal attacks unfolded, fires broke out, consuming several wooden and sheet-metal houses. Volunteer firefighters from Guarambaré quickly extinguished the flames, but the exact occupants of the destroyed homes remain unknown. Police reinforcements were deployed to restore order.

Authorities arrested three individuals in connection with the violence and the possession of bladed weapons. Among those apprehended was Eugenio González, 49, identified as the alleged assailant. Nelson Garcete Acosta, 53, and María Cristina Garcete Acosta, 49, were also detained. The dispute is reportedly rooted in a power struggle over leadership within the social territory.
