Fernandes Shines as Portugal Defeats Chile 2-1 in Pre-World Cup Friendly

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes showcased his importance to the Portuguese national team during a pre-World Cup friendly against Chile in Lisbon. Portugal secured a 2-1 victory, though the match was also marked by the expulsion of Rafael Leão and a subdued performance from Cristiano Ronaldo.

Rafael Leão, who has faced fluctuating form and injuries during his recent season with AC Milan, was shown a red card just before halftime. The incident occurred after an altercation with Chile's Ivan Ramon, whom Leão struck in the face. Despite the match being a friendly, the referee issued red cards to both players.

Following halftime, Portuguese coach Roberto Martínez made several substitutions. Two of these replacements were instrumental in Portugal taking the lead. Rúben Neves delivered an excellent through ball to Gonçalo Guedes, who controlled it perfectly and finished clinically. Bruno Fernandes then extended the lead to 2-0 with a precise shot from the edge of the penalty area, assisted by Francisco Conceição.

Chile managed to pull a goal back in stoppage time through Lucas Cepeda's low shot from about 20 meters. Despite this late effort, Portugal held on to secure the win in their penultimate pre-World Cup friendly. The team's star player, Cristiano Ronaldo, appeared off-form in the first half and was substituted by Martínez at halftime.

Portugal's final friendly before the World Cup is against Nigeria. Subsequently, they will travel to the United States for the tournament, with their opening match scheduled for June 17 in Houston against DR Congo. In Group K, Portugal will also face Uzbekistan and Colombia.
