Fernando Alonso: 'This will probably be my last race in Barcelona'

Veteran Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso has suggested that the upcoming Grand Prix in Barcelona may be his final race on home soil. Speaking at a press conference ahead of the Barcelona-Catalunya event, the 44-year-old Aston Martin driver stated, 'This will probably be my last race in Barcelona in Formula 1.' Alonso's current contract with Aston Martin expires at the end of the season, leaving his future in the sport uncertain.

Alonso, who has a storied history at the Circuit de Montmeló, winning there twice in 2006 and 2013, expressed gratitude for the fans' support over his 23 appearances at the track. He noted that while he doesn't expect to be competitive in qualifying this weekend, he hopes the fans will enjoy the event. He also mentioned that he has 'nothing in mind' regarding his future and plans to make a decision about continuing in F1 after the summer break.

The Spanish Grand Prix is set to alternate with the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps in the coming years, with Barcelona scheduled to host again in 2028, 2030, and 2032. Alonso's comments suggest he may not be racing in 2028, though he left the door open for a potential return. He acknowledged that scoring points this season will be challenging, given Aston Martin's current performance.
