Ferromex addresses environmental concerns after Sonora train derailment, confirms no injuries

A Ferromex train derailed on July 25 near Naco, Sonora, approximately 20 kilometers from the ejido Cuauhtémoc. The incident, caused by a landslide on a culvert weakened by excessive rainwater, occurred in a sparsely populated area. Ferromex, part of Grupo México, stated that the derailment did not result in any injuries or health issues for individuals, despite some false reports.

The event occurred in a depopulated area and was caused by a landslide on the ends of a culvert.

The derailment led to the spillage of sodium hydrosulfide and copper concentrate. Ferromex immediately activated its safety protocols and notified various government authorities, including municipal, state, and federal bodies. Personnel were dispatched to the scene to contain the leak and clean up the spilled materials.

There were no injuries or affected persons, nor any official record of health sequelae related to this fact, as has been falsely mentioned.

Environmental agencies, including the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) and the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa), confirmed that the incident posed no immediate risk to the public. They reported that the spilled materials have been collected, aerial monitoring showed no widespread contamination, and ongoing laboratory and field studies are being conducted.

The company reiterated its commitment to safety and collaboration with authorities. Three Ferromex workers who were evaluated at a local hospital were not hospitalized.
