Ferry fire leaves 5 dead, 35 missing in Indonesia; rescue efforts continue

A fire aboard the KMP Mutiara Sentosa II ferry has resulted in a major rescue operation in Indonesian waters. The vessel, which was en route from Surabaya to Makassar, caught fire around 6:00 AM local time on Sunday in the waters north of Sumenep, Madura.

The ferry was carrying 271 individuals, including 232 passengers, 26 crew members, and 13 others. The blaze caused significant damage to the ship, and also affected numerous vehicles onboard: 15 motorcycles, 25 cars, 140 trucks, and one heavy equipment unit were reportedly destroyed or damaged.

As of Sunday evening, rescue efforts by a joint team have saved 231 people. Tragically, five individuals have been confirmed dead, and 35 others remain missing and are currently being searched for. The situation is still developing, with ongoing efforts to locate the missing and manage the aftermath of the incident.

Rumah Zakat Action, a disaster response organization, has deployed eight volunteers to assist in the evacuation process alongside the joint team. They are also conducting needs assessments for survivors to prepare for future humanitarian aid distribution. The organization is calling for prayers and support for the victims, their families, and the rescue teams working tirelessly at the scene.
