FG dismisses report of ISWAP attack on Girls College in Monguno

Nigeria's Federal Ministry of Education has officially dismissed claims that suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists attacked the Federal Government Girls College (FGGC) in Monguno, Borno State. Reports had alleged that the attack resulted in student fatalities and abduction attempts.

Mrs. Folasade Boriowo, the ministry's Director of Press and Public Relations, stated in a telephone interview that immediate internal verification, including direct contact with the school principal, confirmed the college remains secure and operational. "There is no attack. Our findings have shown that, contrary to media reports, there was no attack at the school. We can confirm that," Boriowo asserted, adding that students and staff are safe and no security breach occurred.

This clarification comes after media reports suggested a pre-dawn attack on Sunday, where insurgents allegedly stormed the facility, which is currently housing students from the Federal Polytechnic, Monguno. Some reports referenced a statement attributed to Lieutenant Mohammed Goni, Acting Military Information Officer of Operation HADIN KAI, indicating that troops, alongside police, foiled an abduction attempt of 46 students. The military account suggested insurgents gained access with collaborators' help before being repelled by troops.

However, the Ministry of Education maintains its own findings show the school was safe and reports of student deaths are unfounded. The ministry assured parents and the public that normal academic activities at FGGC Monguno are proceeding without disruption, contrasting with the military's account of a foiled attempted attack.
