FG Orders Payment of Civil Servants' Outstanding Wage Award Before August 15

The Nigerian Federal Government has ordered the payment of a two-month wage award to federal civil servants by August 15, 2026. This decision came after a crucial meeting between the Minister of Finance and the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council.

The action of the national leadership of JNPSNC was to prevent national embarrassment to the federal government because workers were ready to occupy the office of the minister spontaneously.

The meeting effectively prevented a labor strike, as the council had suspended an August 11 ultimatum concerning workers' welfare. The Minister of Finance, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, personally chaired the session, which included senior ministry officials and labor leaders.

Beyond the immediate wage award, the government also pledged to pursue the long-awaited 40% peculiar allowance. This will be facilitated through a supplementary budget, with the Ministry of Finance collaborating with the Budget Office to secure the necessary funds. Additionally, the government agreed that payment processes for promotion arrears, specifically for batches seven and nine, have been resolved.

The minister emphasised the need for continuous engagement with organised labour to strengthen cordial working relationships with union leaders and ensure timely resolution of workers’ welfare issues.

Minister Oyedele stressed the importance of ongoing dialogue with organized labor to maintain a positive working relationship and ensure prompt resolution of welfare concerns. Labor leaders, represented by Comrade Kabiru Ado and Comrade Olowoyo Gbenga, reaffirmed their commitment to protecting workers' interests and preventing industrial crises. Gbenga noted that the union's intervention was crucial to avoid national embarrassment, as workers were prepared to protest.
