FG seeks Israeli expertise to strengthen border security, combat cross-border crimes

Nigeria's Federal Government is actively seeking Israeli expertise to bolster its border security and intensify efforts against cross-border crimes. This initiative was highlighted following a meeting between Nigeria's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and the outgoing Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, Michael Freeman, at the ministry's headquarters in Abuja.

Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu affirmed Nigeria's dedication to strengthening its collaboration with Israel across critical security domains. These include counter-terrorism, intelligence gathering, information sharing, security financing, and capacity building for security personnel. Nigeria specifically aims to utilize Israeli knowledge in border security to address the escalating challenge of cross-border crimes and improve the nation's overall security framework.

The minister emphasized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration's focus on security as a fundamental driver of national development, stating, "The President emphasizes security everywhere he goes because you are actually going nowhere without security." She also cited the recent rescue of schoolchildren as a significant achievement in the country's fight against insecurity.

Beyond security, Nigeria is keen on fostering partnerships between its startups and Israeli technology firms to stimulate innovation and economic growth. The country is also interested in adopting Israeli technology to enhance water management and boost agricultural output. Ambassador Freeman reiterated Israel's commitment to expanding cooperation with Nigeria in various sectors, including innovation, agriculture, healthcare, security, education, and skills development. He noted that annual trade between Nigeria and Israel, estimated at $200 million, remains below its potential, expressing optimism for increased bilateral trade.
