FG suspends planned Kara Bridge rehabilitation indefinitely

The Federal Ministry of Works has indefinitely suspended the planned rehabilitation of a section of the Kara Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, a project initially slated to commence on July 28, 2026. The repair work was anticipated to take two weeks.

Engr. R. Adeleye, Acting Federal Controller of Works in Ogun State, announced the suspension, stating that a new date for the project would be communicated in due course. He cited "crucial reasons" for the last-minute postponement, directing that the proposed expansion joints repair be put on hold.

I am very sorry to announce at this eleventh hour that we have put on hold the proposed Kara Bridge expansion joints repair scheduled to commence this morning, July 28, 2026, on directives from above due to some very crucial reasons.

Prior to the suspension, the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, had issued a traffic advisory. This advisory informed motorists about the planned rehabilitation, aimed at enhancing the bridge's safety and durability. It detailed that the four-lane carriageway would be reduced to two lanes over a 1.5-kilometer stretch to establish a safe work zone, warning of potential traffic disruptions around the Kara axis.
