Field Fires Erupt During Harvest in Thuringia, Causing Significant Damage

Harvesting operations in Thuringia were disrupted by several field fires, with one incident involving a straw baler causing significant damage. The baler, located between Niederdorla and Oppershausen in the Unstrut-Hainich district, caught fire, likely due to a technical malfunction. Firefighters were able to detach the burning machine from the tractor. Two workers, aged 47 and 29, were treated in the hospital for smoke inhalation but were released the same evening.

The estimated property damage from the straw baler fire amounts to around 70,000 euros. In a separate incident later that evening, a 200-square-meter area burned between Flarchheim and Heroldishausen. Police suspect a cigarette thrown from a vehicle may have ignited this fire. No injuries were reported in the second incident, and authorities are appealing for witnesses.

Additionally, the fire department extinguished three fires on harvested grain fields in eastern Thuringia near Tanna, Meuselwitz, and Ronneburg. These incidents highlight the ongoing challenges of preventing field fires during dry harvest periods.
