Fields Medal win: Wang Hong, Deng Yu are first Chinese nationals to score top maths honour

China has achieved a significant milestone in mathematics with two of its nationals, Wang Hong and Deng Yu, being awarded the prestigious Fields Medal. This marks the first time mathematicians educated entirely within mainland China have received this top honor, and remarkably, two have won in the same year.

The Fields Medal, often referred to as the "Nobel Prize of mathematics," is awarded to mathematicians under 40 years of age. The ceremony took place on Thursday at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Philadelphia, where Wang and Deng received their medals alongside fellow laureates John Pardon and Jacob Tsimerman.

This achievement places China among an elite group of nations. It becomes the fifth country, following the United States, France, Britain, and Russia, to have produced two Fields Medal winners in a single ceremony. Furthermore, China is the first Asian nation to reach this distinction, underscoring its growing influence and excellence in the global scientific community.
