FIFA Investigates World Cup Final Brawl, Argentinian Players Face Bans

FIFA has launched an official investigation into the chaotic scenes that erupted after the 2026 World Cup final between Spain and Argentina in New Jersey. The world football governing body is scrutinizing incidents involving several Argentinian players, who now face potential bans if they are found to have breached FIFA's disciplinary code.

The final match saw Spain narrowly defeat Argentina 1-0. However, the post-game atmosphere turned sour, leading to confrontations between players that have captured FIFA's attention. Video footage has highlighted several key incidents. Leandro Paredes and Nahuel Molina were central to the most serious altercations. Paredes and Thiago Almada were seen grappling with Spanish midfielder Gavi, falling to the ground. In a separate incident, Paredes appeared to grab Eric Garcia by the neck. Meanwhile, Molina is alleged to have struck Rodri with a punch as the Spanish midfielder celebrated his team's victory.

Veteran Argentinian defender Nicolas Otamendi also engaged in a heated verbal exchange with Rodri. This argument was reportedly sparked by comments made by Spanish defender Aymeric Laporte prior to the final. Further allegations suggest former Argentinian defender and now coach Roberto Ayala made an aggressive move towards Spanish midfielder Dani Olmo after the match.

During the game, Argentinian midfielder Enzo Fernandez was sent off after receiving two yellow cards. Leandro Paredes also initially received a red card after the final whistle. However, FIFA later amended its official records, stating Paredes did not receive a red card from referee Slavko Vincic, and this sanction was removed from the match report.
