FIFA Leadership Backs Infantino After Apology for Investor Plan Errors

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has secured the full backing of the organization's highest leadership, according to a statement released after an emergency meeting in Rabat, Morocco. The meeting addressed controversial plans to involve private investors in FIFA competitions.

Infantino reportedly apologized for "mistakes" made during the process of developing the FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal. This initiative aimed to corporateize the World Cup and other major tournaments, subsequently selling shares to the private sector. The statement acknowledged that errors occurred in the process, particularly in how the FIFA Council and member associations were involved, and also after the proposal was leaked to the media.

The plan generated significant backlash globally, leading to its collapse. UEFA, Europe's football governing body, was particularly vocal in its opposition. The secretive nature of the proposal's preparation fueled anger within the football community.

Several national football federations, including Finland's, had previously withdrawn their support for Infantino's re-election bid following the controversy. Finland had initially declared its support for Infantino's candidacy for the 2027 presidential elections after the summer World Cup but rescinded it last week.
