FIFA President Infantino Faces Storm Over Investment Plan

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has been embroiled in controversy following a proposal to create a commercial entity, Fifa Forward Enterprise (FFE), aimed at selling stakes in the organization's tournaments to private investors. The plan, announced on July 28, immediately drew sharp criticism, notably from the European Football Association (UEFA).

UEFA convened an emergency meeting with its member nations, who had received a letter from FIFA outlining the proposal and a deadline of September 19 to declare their support. In response to FIFA's plans, UEFA threatened a boycott of all FIFA-organized tournaments. "It is completely out of the question to agree to an agreement of this nature, where we invite private investors into the heart of FIFA," stated DBU chairman Jesper Møller, vowing support for all necessary actions to halt the project. The football confederations of North and Central America and the Caribbean (Concacaf) and Asia (AFC) also joined the chorus of criticism, though Concacaf did not threaten a boycott. Carlos Cordeiro, a senior advisor to Infantino, resigned in protest.

Facing widespread backlash, FIFA announced on August 1 that it was dropping the FFE plans, citing the division the project had created. While UEFA expressed relief, they also stated that trust in FIFA had been eroded, questioning Infantino's commitment to transparency. DBU chairman Jesper Møller suggested Infantino should step down as FIFA president, and Concacaf called for a "thorough review" of his leadership. The dissent extended to national federations, with Sweden and Wales officially withdrawing their support for Infantino's re-election, citing a loss of confidence.
