Fiji government invests $1.3 million in new housing development

The Fijian government is injecting $1.3 million into a new housing development in Caubati, Nasinu, aiming to boost affordable housing options for its citizens. Housing Minister Maciu Nalumisa highlighted that this funding is a key budget priority for the year, focusing on increasing formal housing developments and aiding low-income families.

The Caubati project is one of several new developments planned, complementing ongoing efforts to formalize settlements across the country. The government is also enhancing the First Home Ownership Initiative. Under the updated scheme, low-income earners making less than $30,000 annually can access grants up to $40,000 for building a home. Those acquiring land with an existing house may qualify for grants up to $60,000.

Under the revised scheme, low-income earners with an annual income below $30,000 can receive grants of up to $40,000 to build a house. Those purchasing land with an existing home on the property can qualify for a grant of up to $60,000.

Assistance will continue for individuals earning between $30,000 and $60,000. Additionally, local government projects, including new town developments and municipal support programs, will receive funding. Minister Nalumisa also acknowledged the pressing need to address growing crime concerns in some housing estates.

Meanwhile, Housing Authority Board Chair Marika Luveniyali confirmed that more housing developments are in progress. The Housing Authority intends to expand its projects, offering more two- and three-bedroom homes in Davuilevu, Veikoba, and Lautoka. These initiatives are part of a larger strategy to strengthen communities and improve the quality of life for Fijians. Discussions are also underway to refine operational plans for tackling crime and enhancing safety within housing communities.
