Fiji hospital plans Dignity Hub for grieving families

Navua Hospital in Fiji is set to build a Dignity Hub, offering a dedicated private space for families to grieve the loss of loved ones. The Hospital Board of Visitors initiated the plan to enhance facilities, recognizing the current absence of any area beyond the mortuary for families to spend time with deceased relatives.

The hospital currently only has a mortuary, with no additional space for families to privately spend time with their deceased loved ones.

Board member Dr. Komal Ram highlighted the need for a more private and dignified environment during difficult times. This initiative is a key priority for the hospital's current fundraising campaign, according to board member Natalie Marletta. The proposed facility aims to provide comfort and a sense of respect for families navigating their grief.

The project is one of the key priorities of this year’s fundraising campaign.

Fundraising efforts have shown strong community support, surpassing the initial $100,000 target. Donations and ticket sales have collectively raised $116,600 for the Dignity Hub. Dr. Ram emphasized that this project is part of broader plans to improve overall services and facilities at Navua Hospital. The board is also actively supporting enhancements to the emergency department and seeking equipment for emergency and outpatient services.
