Fiji, PETRONAS explore fuel security

Fiji is actively seeking to bolster its fuel security and long-term energy resilience by exploring cooperation with Malaysian energy giant PETRONAS. Foreign Affairs Minister Sakiasi Ditoka met with PETRONAS executives to discuss opportunities for partnership, a move that comes as Fiji, a small island developing state, grapples with the consequences of global fuel market volatility. Ditoka highlighted the nation's vulnerability to disruptions in shipping, rising freight costs, and port congestion, which can significantly impact its energy supply. Fiji is particularly interested in being included in PETRONAS' existing oil storage and stockpiling arrangements with international partners. Minister Ditoka emphasized that such a partnership is crucial for Fiji and its maritime neighbors, who rely on the country as a regional hub. He stated that securing the energy supply chain is vital for Fiji's 900,000 citizens and the wider Blue Pacific region. The discussions also encompassed PETRONAS providing technical expertise to support Fiji's development of a National Fuel Security Strategy and its fuel storage infrastructure. Beyond immediate fuel security, Fiji expressed interest in PETRONAS' investments in renewable energy, sustainable biofuels, and lower-carbon solutions, signaling a desire to transition towards cleaner energy systems with Malaysian support and investment.
