Fiji qualify for FIFA U-17 World Cup

The Fiji U-17 national football team, known as the Baby Bula Boys, has secured their spot in the upcoming FIFA U-17 World Cup, marking their third consecutive qualification for the global tournament. This achievement came after a dramatic penalty shootout victory against the Solomon Islands in the semi-finals of the OFC U-16 Men’s Championship 2026, held at the PNG Football Stadium.

The tense semi-final match remained goalless through 90 minutes, with both teams creating scoring opportunities but failing to convert. The decisive moments arrived in the penalty shootout, where Fijian goalkeeper Kirikiti Biu emerged as the hero. Biu made two critical saves, thwarting the Solomon Islands' attempts, before striker Isoa Baselala calmly converted the winning penalty to seal a 4-2 victory for Fiji.

This marks Fiji's third consecutive appearance at the U-17 World Cup and only their third time reaching the final of the OFC U-16 Championship. They are set to face either New Zealand or Papua New Guinea in the final match on Saturday.

Throughout the game, the Solomon Islands had the upper hand in the first half, with George Lea’i posing a constant threat down the left wing. His pace and skillful play created two clear chances for Barry Waletofea, who unfortunately hit the side-netting and later the post. Jayer Makarani also came close, with an effort going just wide. In the second half, Biu made a crucial fingertip save to deny Gregy Gau, keeping Fiji in contention. As the Solomon Islands' energy waned, Fiji gained momentum, with Ryan Swami and Baselala missing opportunities to secure the win before penalties. Having experienced a semi-final shootout loss to New Caledonia last year, Fiji demonstrated composure and resilience to overcome the pressure this time.
