Fiji's Food Import Reduction Efforts Hampered by Data Gaps

Suva, Fiji – The Fijian government's ambition to slash its mounting food import bill is facing a significant hurdle: a critical lack of data. The Ministry of Agriculture has stated that it does not possess enough comprehensive information to set effective targets for reducing the nation's food import expenditure, which exceeds $1.1 billion.

Officials are working to establish a clearer picture of what Fiji imports, what is consumed domestically, and what products are processed locally or re-exported. This detailed understanding is crucial not only for addressing the high import costs but also for identifying potential benefits from processing and selling goods within Fiji and to external markets.

To bridge these information gaps, the Ministry is establishing working groups that will collaborate with stakeholders, including those in the tourism industry and food processing sectors. The aim is to improve access to timely and accurate data, which is deemed essential for guiding future decisions and strategic planning.

Past challenges with data sharing have been acknowledged, but the Ministry emphasizes that improving access to reliable information is paramount. This enhanced data capability will be critical in guiding Fiji's efforts to reduce its dependence on food imports and potentially boost local production and processing industries.
