Fiji's Tui Nayau calls for urgent maritime safety overhaul after rescue

Following the successful rescue of six health workers and their boat handler, the paramount chief of Fiji's Lau province, Turaga Tui Nayau Ratu Tevita Lutunauga Kapaiwai Uluilakeba Mara, has renewed calls for a significant overhaul of maritime safety measures.

Ratu Tevita emphasized that while the safe return of the seven individuals brings relief, the incident starkly illustrates the urgent need for enhanced systems to protect those reliant on sea transport in outer island communities. He is urging the government to take immediate action by reintroducing dedicated health vessels for maritime provinces, expanding the existing shipping subsidy program, and providing essential resources for the Vanua Coast Watch initiative.
