Filipina Eala Stuns Osaka, Reaches Washington Open Final

Washington D.C. – Filipina tennis player Alexandra Eala has reached the final of the Washington Open after defeating former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka. Eala will now compete for her first career title against American Jessica Pegula.

Eala, currently ranked world No. 28, secured a decisive victory over Osaka, ranked No. 13, with a score of 6-4, 6-2. The match lasted 1 hour and 16 minutes. This marks Eala's second career final and her first on a hard court, following her loss in the Eastbourne final in 2025.

Regardless of Sunday's result, Eala is guaranteed to reach a career-high ranking of at least world No. 23. A victory against Pegula, the current world No. 3 and 2019 Washington champion, could see Eala climb into the Top 20.

Pegula advanced to the final by defeating Russia's Diana Schneider. The only previous encounter between Pegula and Eala was in the semifinals of the WTA 1000 Miami tournament in 2025, where Pegula emerged victorious in three sets. Eala's impressive run this year has included wins against top players like Elena Rybakina, Iga Swiatek, and Elina Svitolina.
