Owners face the choice of buying the surrounding forest land at inflated prices or paying a "protection fee" to lease the landscape, neither of which prevents the destruction of nearby woods.

While discussions about sustainable forest use and biodiversity are common in Finland, the impact on individuals whose berry and mushroom-picking forests disappear is often overlooked. Cottage owners contribute to local economies through taxes and by using local services, yet their perspectives are dismissed when they conflict with economic interests.
