Fire in Kouvaras attributed to sparks from HEDNO cables

An investigation into a fire that broke out in Kouvaras, Attica, suggests that sparks from low-voltage cables operated by HEDNO (Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator) may be the cause. Preliminary findings from the Hellenic Fire Service's investigative authorities point to this possibility.

According to sources, three residents of the area reported witnessing sparks emanating from a low-voltage cable on a pole. This pole was located near an abandoned poultry farm, which was ultimately destroyed by the fire. The sparks are believed to have ignited dry grass at the base of the pole, leading to the rapid spread of the blaze, exacerbated by strong winds.

A team from the Directorate for the Response to Arson Crimes (DAEE) visited the site and observed clear evidence on the pole indicating a fire. This evidence supports the theory that the oscillation of the cables due to strong winds caused them to come into contact, generating the sparks. The cables are described as free-hanging rather than twisted, making them susceptible to wind-induced movement.

Following these observations, the area has been cordoned off and is being guarded. The next steps involve the seizure of the pole and other materials, along with an expert inspection to scientifically document the evidence. This process is crucial for completing the case file to be sent to the competent prosecutor.
