Fires in France and Spain reach critical point; over 250,000 evacuated

Wildfires raging in France and Spain have forced the evacuation of over 250,000 people, as both nations grapple with unprecedented fire activity. Authorities are working to contain the blazes amid challenging conditions, with a focus on protecting lives and populated areas.

In France, the situation has reached a critical point, with Interior Minister Laurent Nunez describing the burned area as a "historic record." Nearly 98,000 hectares have been scorched, particularly in the southwestern Gironde and Landes departments, where fires remain uncontained. Around 197,000 people have been evacuated from areas near Bordeaux as the flames advance.

Spain is also battling significant wildfires, especially west of Madrid. The Interior Ministry reported that approximately 70,000 people have been evacuated from villages in this region. The fires have consumed an estimated 25,000 hectares, with nearly 10,000 hectares affected in the Madrid region alone and an additional 13,000 to 15,000 hectares in the neighboring province of Ávila.

Both countries are receiving international support. Approximately 100 firefighters from Paris have been dispatched to southwestern France to assist in combating the blazes. France has also deployed a military transport aircraft equipped to drop 20 tons of fire retardant. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez emphasized that the priority is to "save lives and protect populated areas," while acknowledging the difficult hours ahead due to unpredictable winds.

While conditions in Spain showed some improvement overnight, with fires spreading less and intensity decreasing, officials caution that Saturday will remain challenging. The fires near Bordeaux are moving towards the city, prompting precautionary evacuations. Drivers have been urged to avoid certain roads in the Gironde department.
