Fires rage in France and Spain, forcing tens of thousands to flee

Wildfires are forcing mass evacuations across southwestern France and the Madrid region of Spain, with authorities describing the situation as critical. In Spain, two major fires are dangerously close to merging, threatening to worsen an already dire emergency. Regional president Isabel Díaz Ayuso reported that at least 63,000 people have been evacuated or confined in the Madrid area due to what she called "the worst fire in history" for the region.

Firefighters worked intensely to prevent the merging of different fire fronts, but officials now warn that the fire in the Madrid region, which has already scorched 6,000 hectares, is moving towards another blaze in the neighboring Castilla y León community, where 9,000 hectares have burned. Carlos Novillo, the regional environment minister, stated that the Madrid fire is at its "peak moment" and is "beyond the capacity to extinguish it."

Authorities have arrested one person and are investigating another in connection with the Castilla y León fire. While the flames are still distant from central Madrid, they are impacting densely populated residential areas surrounded by terrain that facilitates rapid fire spread. Félix Hernández, a councilor from the completely evacuated municipality of Aldea del Fresno, expressed his shock, saying, "I am 53 years old and I have seen significant fires, but not one this big."

Meanwhile, a separate fire in Guadalajara, northeast of Madrid, which has burned 32,000 hectares since January 1, is now stabilizing, and the army has withdrawn from the area.
