Heavy rains affect 83 homes in Nombre de Dios, Colón

Dozens of families in Nombre de Dios, Costa Arriba de Colón, have been displaced after torrential rains caused rivers to overflow, inundating at least 83 homes. The deluge forced emergency evacuations as residents scrambled to escape the rising waters.

As the water levels recede, affected families have begun the arduous task of cleaning their homes. Many have suffered significant losses, with essential belongings, appliances, and personal items damaged or destroyed by the floodwaters. Authorities are currently distributing humanitarian aid, including mattresses, cleaning kits, and bottled water, while continuing to assess the overall damage.

The flooding was not confined to Nombre de Dios, with reports of inundations also in Portobelo and Viento Frío, other communities in Costa Arriba de Colón. Access to some of these areas has been hampered by the persistent adverse weather conditions, delaying damage assessments and aid distribution.

The National Civil Protection System (Sinaproc) has issued a vigilance alert for the Caribbean coast, warning of intense rainfall and electrical storms. Residents in flood-prone areas are urged to remain vigilant, avoid entering swollen rivers or beaches with strong waves, and report any emergencies. Authorities continue to monitor meteorological conditions and vulnerable communities across the Colón province.
